Damon Clear Braces
What Are Damon Braces?
‘The Damon System’, as Damon braces are more formally known, was introduced in 1996 by Dr Dwight Damon. He specifically designed them to avoid the issue of friction between the wires and the brackets, which has been associated with an increased treatment time and discomfort. The main differences between Damon braces and traditional ligation braces is the way that the wire is held to the brackets on your teeth. Traditional braces use elastic bands or fine wires to tie the wire into the brackets. Damon braces on the other hand, use a unique slide mechanism, allowing your teeth more freedom to move and reducing friction.
The Damon System utilizes a patented slide mechanism to connect archwires to the bracket while allowing the wire to move freely. The Damon System reduces friction and improves oral hygiene by eliminating elastic ties.
Traditional braces use elastic ties to hold archwires in place. Unfortunately, elastic ties create friction which can slow treatment down.
How Damon Braces Work
While treatment time can vary, the Damon System has been proven to treat faster and require fewer appointments than traditional braces.
Light and Gentle Forces
Clear Damon Braces are usually selected by older teens and adults concerned with the cosmetic appearance of their braces. Other than the color and material used for the brackets, there is no difference in treatment quality or result between metal and clear braces.
Clinically Proven for 20+ Years
• No elastic or metal ties. Unlike traditional braces, Damon brackets are self-ligating (a door mechanism exists within each bracket to lightly secure the wire) and results in a passive slide. This means the elastics and clips used in traditional braces are not required. Colored ties are still available, however, for patients that may want them as a fun decoration.
• Fewer office visits needed for adjustments. Teeth move into place at a more even, gentle, and continuous pace with the use of lightweight, high-technology, shape-memory wires. This means fewer appointments are needed for adjustments.
• Faster, more comfortable adjustment appointments. Opening and closing the doors when changing wires and making adjustments to the braces is quick and easy. This results in less time spent in the chair and less “tightening” of braces.
Why Damon Braces are Different
Light, Gentle Forces
That’s because the Damon System’s advanced technology uses light, gentle forces to move teeth to their correct positions more freely and more comfortably.
Reduced Need for Elastic Ties
Conventional braces use elastics to tie the wire into the bracket which causes friction and pressure, making treatment slower and less comfortable.
Fewer Tooth Extractions or Expanders
Damon doctors can now treat most cases without extractions, the removal of healthy teeth, or the use of headgear or palatal expanders to make space. These are more often required with traditional treatment and can be uncomfortable.
